Abstract

Our perception of reality is often distorted. We tend to believe that the illusions we perceive are the truth, while in reality, everything is seen and heard differently by each individual. Magicians know of this fact very well, and, as the master manipulators of perception, illusion, and deception, they manipulate our perception with words, gestures, and wondrous trickeries. Music works very similarly by manipulating our aural perception with harmonies, rhythm, and timbre that sometimes could give us the impression of a painting, a place, or another time.

At the crossroad of music, magic, and illusions, this research takes a close look to the connection shared between the two art forms through an interdisciplinary process inspired by the tales from ancient magical practices to modern optical illusions, sonic illusion and various techniques that have been used to manipulate human perception.
