MEGA MAT: Reimagining Waste into Wonder
As part of Bangkok Design Week 2025, Mega Mat transformed the heart of the city with an 860-square-meter recycled plastic mat inspired by the colors of Wat Suthat’s roof. A collaboration between MVRDV Architects, CEA, PTT Global Chemicals, and the Netherlands Embassy, the installation promoted circular design and plastic waste reduction.

The mat served as both a public gathering space and an educational exhibit, showcasing traditional Thai weaving patterns and innovative recycling methods. A special highlight was the “Music Mat(ter)” concert by the Princess Galyani Vadhana Institute of Music, featuring live performances by PGVIM Percussion, Brass, and String Ensembles, blending art, community, and sustainability.

After the event, the mats were repurposed into bags or donated to temples and communities—extending their life and message. Mega Mat exemplified how thoughtful design can raise environmental awareness while celebrating cultural heritage.
